Mickey,Lets start with physiological needs, which include things like food (are they hunger?), water (is it clean or do they have running water?), sleep (do they have a bed or share one; do they have a bed time/curfew), clothing (does their clothes fit; do they have enough clothes; are their clothes clean), and shelter (do they have a home or are they homeless; does it have heat/air/lights; is it a safe neighborhood). If these basic needs are not met, then a student will definitely struggle. Next is safety and everyone wants to feel safe. A student that has been abused and/or neglected or has been in an environment where they see alcohol/drugs, gang activity, violence, crime or they have poor parental/guardian supervision or lack of support, then they will have difficulty. Social belonging is third: do they have family, friends, or pets; do they play sports, go to church, participate in a club, gang, or other social activity; are they being bullied; do they attend school (truancy issues); is there a language barrier? The last two are esteem and self-actualization but you have to have these other three to get there and many of the students that I work with struggle a lot with these three that I mentioned (physiological needs, safety, and belonging/love).I need a reply to the above post.
