How do the movie producers use words and images to make an argument about the films they want you to see?

ESSAY PROMPT: Summer movie season is over, alas, but well always have the posters. Were going to look at movie posters as arguments and analyze them rhetorically. Youll break down one movie poster (past or present that youve never seen) into its parts, tell your reader how those parts form their argument, and then evaluate that argument.

THE SCENARIO: A friend or family member is interested in seeing a movie, any movie. Youre walking past the theater where there is no wifi (I know, thats never gonna happen, but lets pretend)and talking to her. The only evidence you have to help you decide are the posters hanging alongside the marquee.

YOUR JOB: use rhetorical analysis to make a recommendation about ONE movie. Remember that in making a recommendation, your only choices are not to see this movie or to not see it.

YOUR AUDIENCE: a friend or family member. Think of ONE specific person.

First, you must find a movie poster (past or present) that makes some kind of an argument:
____________ is a movie about ___________________.
If you cant find an argument, look for a different poster.

Heres the joy, maybe: you dont have to actually have seen the film, as a friend of mine used to say, you only have to see the poster.

Second, evaluate whether the argument is convincing.
In order to do this, you must:
Introduce your topic to your reader (hook paragraph)
Summarize the poster (give the reader a description)
Break down the poster (not the movie) into its rhetorical elements/parts (evidence)
Explain how the parts form a whole (rhetorical analysis)
Make a recommendation: Because ________________ is a movie about _________________, we should ___________________________________
____________________________________ (conclusion/falling action)

In addition, youll need to provide a Works Cited page if you use any outside sources.
FOR THIS ESSAY ONLY: you dont have to use any outside sources. You may use as many but no more than two.

Length: 1,200-1,750 words in MLA document format (Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced body with one-inch margins)
WHAT WILL I BE LOOKING FOR WHEN I GRADE YOUR ESSAY?
Content/Organization:
o Consistent awareness of purpose and audience. You should maintain the academic voice (third person perspective) and avoid the casual interruption of personal opinion.
o A substantial introduction that addresses your reading audience with an introductory hook and concludes with compound thesis (or a thesis that presents your main idea and the counter argument(s) that will appear in your body paragraphs).
o Summary body paragraphs that objectively review the major points of your selected essays.
o The development of a unique argument that addresses parents directly and persuades them with logos, pathos, and/or ethos.

Style/Mechanics:
o Varied sentence structure (This means you should not write the same type of sentence over and over again. Im looking for variety and style).

o Strong, seamless transition sentences must connect each body paragraph (see Rules for Writers pgs. 64-66 or Section 4d).
o Sentence clarity. Be sure to avoid sentence fragments, run-ons, dangling modifiers, mixed constructions, use of the passive voice, and other grammar snags.
o Evidence of Proofreading. There should be little to no distracting grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors.

Discuss the conceptual components of your selected middle range theory as applied to nursing practice.

Discussion – Week 4 COLLAPSE Conceptual Components of Theory As with research, concepts play a critical role in theory development. Consider for a moment the purpose of theory and its application to nursing practice. At the heart of any theorywhich seeks to describe, explain, predict, or prescribelies the concept or concepts to be explored or addressed. Within the iterative process of theory development, concepts must be defined and refined as the relationships between them are identified in order to articulate reality and inform effective practice. To prepare: Reflect on the information presented Learning Resources, including Chapter 4 of Theoretical Basis for Nursing. How and why do concepts serve as the building blocks of theory? Brainstorm a list of middle range theories that have been applied in nursing practice. Then, select one with which you are most familiar. If necessary, refer to Chapter 10 or 11 in the course textbook, Theoretical Basis for Nursing, for ideas. You may also conduct additional research using the Walden Library or other scholarly databases. Contemplate the various conceptual components of your selected theory, including how they are defined, linked to the real world, observed, and measured. By Day 3 post a cohesive response that addresses the following: How are these components observed and measured in practice? Provide at least two specific examples. Share any insights into how the theory has developed or changed based on the testing of the concepts.

Determine the rhetorical basics: What is the rhetorical context of the text (including historical/cultural moment, location, cultural conversation circulating about the issue)? What is the purpose (or what are the purposes)?

Essay 1 Prompt:Taking our assigned readings by Kellner and Share, Scholes, Maasik and Solomon, and Bunn into consideration, perform a detailed rhetorical analysis on a video text. You are not required to cite our readings in your writing; you are required to apply the methods the readings demonstrate. The purpose of a rhetorical analysis is to examine, explain, and evaluate how a text works: the persuasive moves it makes; how it responds to the rhetorical situation; the ways it positions its author/creator, the ways it positions its audience, how it accounts for or doesnt account for other perspectives, etc. The rhetorical analysis moves beyond description; it also makes an argument about the texts effectiveness as a result of its workings. This project will require several steps:Choose a video text. Youll want to select a video text that a) interests you, b) is complex enough rhetorically to repay careful analysis, and c) isnt too long or complex that you cant examine how it works in a fairly short analytical essay. You may choose any video text (commercial, TV show episode, campaign ad, music video, etc.) in any medium (broadcast, online, social media). You may expand upon the writing you did for IWA #3.
Who is the intended audience? What is the text asking of its audience? Note: these questions are not merely asking what the commercial showed (the visual details or plot that can be observed by any viewer).
Use the examples from Kellner and Share, Bunn, and Scholes to examine, explain, and evaluate how your text works rhetorically. This will comprise your invention work for the essay. You may find that some of Bunn and Scholes approaches work better than others for analyzing your video text, so you will likely have to try out several of them as you draft. Here are some questions to get started: What explicit argument(s) does the video make and how? What implicit argument(s) does the video make and how?
Draft and revise a 5-7 page rhetorical analysis essay. Youll need to craft a coherent, sensibly organized essay that guides your readers through your analysis. Provide evidence and explanation of your interpretation of the video text and its argument(s). Use specific aspects (like dialogue, images, narrative, etc.) as support for your interpretation. Be thorough in connecting the dots of how you came to understand the video as making a particular argument (because not every audience receives a text the same). Your essay should be thoughtful and well developed, carefully organized, and mechanically sound, with proper citation of your video text using MLA guidelines. **Dont forget to include an Authors Note when submitting your final version; see the syllabus for further information on Authors Notes.
Considerations for evaluation of final version:1) Does the writing discuss the rhetorical basics of the video?2) To what extent does the writing go beyond description to analysis of the video text? Does the writing make an argument (implicit or explicit) about the pieces effectiveness?3) Does the writing use specific examples and evidence to support the writers interpretation of the video?4) Is the writing appropriately focused, so that it achieves depth and clarity?5) Is the writing organized in a meaningful way?6) Does the writing reference the video text and cite properly?7) Does the writing show development from draft to revision? Is this discussed in the authors note?8) Was the writer actively engaged in online peer review?
