The paper has considered the issue of obesity as well as overweight as one of the major health care issues in the United States. Several health researchers have confirmed that overweight and obesity are conditions caused by an increase in the size of fat tissues in the body. Detection of these conditions is done by the doctors through measurement of the Body Mass Index (BMI), and waist as the initial steps in screening and diagnosing the conditions (Chukhraiev, Zukow, Chukhraieva, & Unichenko, 2017). Some of the worrying statistics concerning these two conditions as per data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2013 to the year 2017 indicates that for every 3 adults, one person is found to be overweight while out of three adults, two of them are both overweight and obese. Furthermore, for every three people, one adult is obese, and in children out of sixteen, one of the adolescents of ages ranging from 2 to 19 is obese (Chukhraiev et al., 2017). Most importantly the paper is going to identify new measures and prevention strategies suitable for managing these conditions.
Background
The following section will discuss the background of the topic, for example, this topic is considered of importance given that the most common lifestyle diseases and conditions experienced by many United States citizens result from overweight and obesity (Lehnert, Sonntag, Konnopka, Riedel-Heller & Knig, 2013). According to WHO, the issue of obesity is a severe condition that more often leads to complications such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, cancers and atherosclerosis among other lifestyle diseases (Chukhraiev et al., 2017). Also, the topic is of concern because the prevention and management of these conditions can be initiated at personal levels.
General Problem Statement
The general problem is the rising cases of lifestyle diseases which are as a result of overweight and obesity. Recent data from NHANES and CDC indicates that about 13 % of adults between the ages of 20 and 50 have diabetes (Chukhraiev et al., 2017). However, 40 % of these cases have not been diagnosed. Moreover, 95 % of diabetes cases are undiagnosed. Consequently, the pre-diabetes condition which is rarely accompanied by symptoms highly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke alongside developing type 2 diabetes. Despite all these risks, managing overweight and obesity depends on behavioral changes on lifestyle which include healthy diet and involvement of physical activities in daily routines (Ng, Fleming, Robinson, Thomson, Graetz, Margono, & Abraham, 2014).
Specific Problem Statement
The particular problem is the insensitivity of the better part of American`s population regarding overweight and obesity. Due to this, the children representing future population get introduced to the unhealthy lifestyle comprising of poor dietary and physical inactivity (Ng et al., 2014). Consequently, the unhealthy lifestyle contributes to increased cases of obesity and overweight resulting in lifestyle diseases and premature deaths (Chukhraiev et al., 2017). Additionally, this specific problem can be argued to have been the result of health illiteracy level in most of the rural population in the USA hence the majority lack awareness regarding the importance of early screening and detection of their weights a step that can help in the timely prevention of the lifestyle diseases associated with overweight (Lehnert et al., 2013).
Another challenge is that the current health care system has put more focus on treatment than prevention, and this has rendered the USA population unable to gain knowledge on how to manage their weight (Ng et al., 2014). Some of the environmental factors that have seen the number of cases of obesity and obesity include parents and children taking much of the time in a car alongside excessive availability of food and drinks everywhere in the rural areas (Lehnert et al., 2013). For instance, restaurants at home are many as compared to olden days. It is therefore evident that factors are contributing to obesity range from environmental factors and individual behaviors which in the rural parts of the USA have led to excess intake of calories and less time for physical activities.
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this research is to determine if there is a connection between health literacy level and the rising cases of overweight and obesity in most rural areas of the USA. Moreover, it can be observed that healthcare systems have failed to initiate programs aimed at educating the public on the risk factors associated with unhealthy eating and lack of physical activities. Lack of awareness and misplaced priorities by the healthcare systems have contributed to the majority of individuals failing to go for early screening and weight measurements and hence unable to prevent the consequences arising from overweight and obesity. The research has again established that if the health care system can encourage prevention instead of focusing on late treatment, then such cases of overweight and obesity will reduce.
Research Questions
This research question would investigate how parents have been one of the factors that have caused the increase in the number of cases regarding obesity as well as being overweight among children. According to many findings, there is a lack of parental involvements in developing school as well as community-based measures and programs for prevention of obesity (Lehnert et al., 2013). Also, poverty experienced by most parents has resulted in poor health practices in children which in turn have resulted in poor eating habits. It is also pointed out that children raised by single parents have high chances of developing obesity (Chukhraiev et al., 2017). Additionally, most parents have been insensitive towards what their children eat as well as physical activity involvements. For example, it is parents who buy for their children the computers but do not monitor the amount of time taken by the children using such devices.
Research question # 2: How is the health care system contributing to overweight and obesity in rural parts of the USA?
It is an area of concern that health care systems in most parts of the USA do not prioritize the need for creating awareness on the early screening and detection of body weight. As a result, most people in the rural USA do not understand the need for checking their weight regularly (Ng et al., 2014). Moreover, the healthcare sector has done very little to initiate programs that can engage people to educate them on the need for healthy diet and physical activeness (Chukhraiev et al., 2017). Finally, economic constraints and cultural preferences have deprived most parents the opportunities to get involved in public health programs essential for gaining awareness regarding the risk factors associated with overweight and obesity.
