Why does Devitt feel like we need to rethink the purpose and definition of genre? How does this relate to what Dirk said from last week?

How is Devitt participating in a conversation with other writing teachers/theorists? Are they agreeing? Disagreeing? Expanding? Clarifying?
What is the role of form and content when thinking about genre in Devitt’s piece? What about the individual and the group?
How can one use genre negatively? How can they use it effectively?
What common ideas do you notice in Devitt’s piece that also show up in Dirk’s discussion of genre?
Writing Style Best Practices: Look at Devitt’s conclusion, what moves does it make to keep the conversation going after we finish reading this piece?
Beattie
How does Beattie help to expand on our definition of genre through her response to Devitt?
What differences do you notice in Beattie’s audience compared to Devitt’s audience? How does each author connect with their intended audience?
How is Beattie’s response the next stage of the conversation? How can we apply Burke’s Parlor Metaphor to this response?
Writing Style Best Practices: Review the transitions that Beattie uses at the start of each paragraph. How does she connect all of her writing under a central theme? How does she help us to move smoothly from idea to idea without feeling like it has come out of nowhere?
While these questions are good starting points, don’t feel like they have to be the only topics you write about. I look forward to seeing your discussions about this reading!

Write a 700- to 1,050-word argumentative essay on a business decision that you would like to propose. Include the following: Explain the business decision. Discuss why the business decision is valid or not valid based on your argument.

For this assignment, you will prove the validity of a claim by presenting concrete information that can be used to persuade your audience. You will have an opportunity to argue for or against a specific business decision and provide evidence to support your position. Identify the logical structure of each argument within the essay by placing the number in bold at the beginning of each argument. For example (not to be included as part of your assignment): Scenario: Recently the city has shared there will be a water restriction to all homeowners for the next 12 months for conservation efforts. Residents will be allowed to water their yards one time per month. Argument: As a homeowner, I am in clear disagreement with the city’s new water restriction for homeowners. If I am unable to water the yard, (1) then my flowers will die, resulting in a negative return on investment. (2) The dry land may cause foundation issues to the property, resulting in potential repair costs. If I am unable to water the lawn, (3) the dry yard and soil will not provide a good curb appeal for the property, which will negatively affect resale value. Because of this, I do not agree with the water restriction imposed by the city. I propose a more lenient water conservation program, such as the one implemented by XYZ County. XYZ County’s water restriction program allowed residents to water twice per week.

Avoid a simple, chronological analysis, where you move from paragraph to paragraph in the original essay, telling us what the author says and does in each. Organize your essay around the key rhetorical strategies that you are pursuing in your analysis.

Purpose and Audience
For this assignment, you will be given a choice of analyzing the rhetorical strategies in one of the three essays we read for WA2 Writing a Summary-Response. In general, you are being asked to analyze how the strategies of the writer support his/her larger purpose, and whether these strategies are successful given the audience he/she is addressing. When attempting to rhetorically analyze an essay, you must pay close attention to three things:
Context (the position the writer is writing from)
Purpose (the intention of the essay/why it was written), and
Audience (who the viewers/readers are)
Thus, your rhetorical analysis should demonstrate how a text does or doesn’t fulfill its purpose given the audience, context, and larger purpose. The audience for your essay will be me and your classmates and requires academic writing and formatting.
Planning and Drafting
1. Choose and read an essay: Select one of the assigned essays (it can be the same one you chose for the Summary/Response or another one and read it several times, paying special attention to not only what the author is saying, but how he or she presents her ideas. A good way to begin this process is to jot down what you think is the text’s purpose (including the thesis of the essay), the audience for the piece, and the context in which it was written.
2. Consider the rhetorical situation: Next, you must think about the issues of purpose, audience, and context in terms of the writing choices the author made. This is what will make up the bulk of your analysis. Focus on writing strategies (such as tone and style as well as rhetorical appeals ethos, logos, pathos) that you wish to analyze in the text. I suggest you choose only the elements which seem most relevant to the essay you are analyzing and its relation to audience. Don’t try to write about all the elements and rhetorical choices, or your paper may be too broad and provide shallow analysis. The idea here is to write a sustained and detailed analysis.
This process should show how specific strategies the writer used influence the meaning of the essay. (i.e., how audience effects expression, how context effects content, etc.). These are issues you will need to consider in Step #3 below.
3. Devise a thesis statement: For this essay, it is essential that you come up with your own thesis statement about the essay you are rhetorically analyzing. This does not mean you simply restate the original author’s thesis, as you did with your summary but that you create a thesis of your own in which you attempt to analyze whether the author was successful or unsuccessful in fulfilling her larger purpose and why you have come to this conclusion. This analytical thesis statement must address the overall design of the essay you are rhetorically analyzing, with an emphasis on particular strengths or weaknesses of the author’s writing technique. We will hold a workshop in the future to explain more fully the process of writing a thesis paragraph as well as provide examples.
4. Support your thesis: The rest of your paper should focus on supporting the assertion in your thesis statement, with each paragraph devoted to explaining and supporting a particular part of your argument. This is where you need to expand on all the separate elements that contribute to (or hinder) the author’s overall goal. Be sure to provide textual examples from the essay. You will need to paraphrase, quote, and/or describe particular sections of the text to make your analysis sound and convincing but make sure you are also analyzing and not just summarizing the article. Be sure to make connections with your thesis statement in your supporting paragraphs by using transitions. (If you do not provide a thesis statement of your own, it will be nearly impossible to determine what your supporting paragraphs are supporting).
5. Conclude Your Essay: Conclude your analysis by reiterating (not simply repeating) your main ideas about the rhetorical analysis of the essay. During the course of your analysis, your analytical thesis statement has gathered momentum, so you should be able to make a final, insightful observation without veering off into ground not covered earlier in your paper.
Some Possible Pitfalls
Avoid lengthy quotations and/or paraphrases of the original essay. The majority of your paper should consist of your own analysis with signal phrases, attributive tags used as well as phrases from the essay.

Avoid inserting your own opinion about the issues in the original essay. You are giving your informed opinion about the author’s rhetorical strategies. This means that statements like, “The essay sucked (was awesome)” is not going to fly. Your analysis is not about taste or politics, but about effective writing. Approach this assignment in terms of analyzing writing strategies.
Be sure you have an analytical thesis statement.
Be sure your analysis focuses on the writing strategies and does not summarize the essay. You
already did that!
Grading Criteria
You will be graded on the following criteria:
Analysis has clearly defined rhetorical strategies it is discussing in depth
Contains a well-supported thesis paragraph with an introductory sentence that includes the author
and essay title.
Is organized logically
Use attributive tags and signal phrases
Has an objective, neutral tone
Has very few sentence level errors.
