Literature Analysis Form (LAF)
1. Name of author(s)
2. Credentials:
3. What type of publication is it? (Journal, internet site, government document, public media?)
4. What is the date of the paper?
5. What is the research about?
6. What is the theory or hypothesis?
7. What are the variables?
8. Methodology: What was used? How was the study carried out? (Surveys, experiments, interviews, etc.) Level of evidence?
9. Was it a quantitative or qualitative study?
10. Is it an exploratory, descriptive or explanatory type of study?
We begin exploring something new with exploratory research. Then, we conduct descriptive research to increase our knowledge of it. Lastly, we need to explain it by using explanatory research.
An exploratory design is conducted about a research problem when there are few or no earlier studies to refer to. The focus is on gaining insights and familiarity for later investigation or undertaken when problems are in a preliminary stage of investigation.
Descriptive research is used to describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon being studied. It does not answer questions about how/when/why the characteristics occurred.
Explanatory research is defined as an attempt to connect ideas to understand cause and effect, meaning researchers want to explain what is going on. (Answers the WHY question)
11. Were the visuals (graphs and charts) easy to read and understand?
12. Did the author draw the appropriate conclusions from the study?
13. What was the major finding of the study?14. Were there limitations to the study? If so, what were they?
15. Did the author critique their own study and perhaps provide avenues for further study?
16. How did this guide you to your research question/topic?APA Reference:
