Final Paper

Over the last five weeks of this course, you have learned how to use Epi InfoTM 7 to analyze epidemiological data from the 2011 National High School Youth Risk Behavior Survey.  After analyzing statistical data from a research project such as this one, it is important that you disseminate your findings via reports or publications.  For your Final Paper, you will analyze data for your selected research topic using the same research questions that we used for the class assignments in Weeks Three and Four of this course.  The exposure and outcome variables will be based on the research topic you selected in Week Two.  The research report that you will create for your Final Paper from this data analysis should contain the following sections:

Introduction: Provide a clear, comprehensive, and detailed introduction and background for the issue to be considered using current literature and previous research. This section will deliver all relevant information necessary for a full understanding of the topic, and should contain a succinct thesis statement that describes the purpose of the study.

Literature Review: Provide a clear and comprehensive review of the literature for your chosen topic. The literature should provide details of what has been done in this area of research from a minimum of five scholarly sources that were published within the last five years, not including the textbook.  The literature review should show any gaps in the literature on the current subject.

Methods:  Create a brief description of the data set used and how data was collected.  Since secondary data is being used, utilize the CDC’s 2011 YRBS Data User’s Guide for documentation about the data that was collected.  Clearly state the research questions that you are using for your study as well as the hypothesis you are researching for your Final Paper.  You must describe how the data was analyzed, identify what questions from the survey were used to answer the research question(s) you posed, and explain which statistical tests you used to answer the research question(s).

Results:  Present and interpret your results on the following research questions for the selected topic:

Assess the sample population for the variables related to the topic and the following demographic variables (age, gender, race, and grade).

Determine the percentage outcome variable by gender, race, grade, age, and smoking status.

Determine the prevalence of males and females for the exposure and outcome variables. Is there a statistical difference between males and females?

Determine the prevalence of exposure and outcome variables by grade, race, and age. Are they statistically different?

Determine what demographic variables are predictors of the outcome variable. Determine if there are other risk factors for the outcome variable.

Discussion: Provide a summary and interpretation of the key research findings. You will need to use previous research to compare and contrast findings and draw conclusions from these findings. Additionally, discuss implications of the research findings as well as the limitations of the research study, and provide suggestions for future research studies. This section must conclude with a statement that reaffirms the thesis/study purpose.
