I need you to write me a discussion paper about the textbook Art and Mass Media, by Dr. Betty Ann Brown.
(Online, 2005).
Before you write the discussion paper read carefully this question, because the discussion paper based on this question below and make sure to read the textbook that I have mentioned. It is important please, and let me know if you want more that 1 page.
Dr. Brown began her book with two major motivating factors in Western culture: the love of technology and the love of individuality (the autonomous individual). Many of you pointed out in sveral forums how our love of technology has exploded into a whole new way of life. A love that began over a thousand years ago.
Our country began with the philosophy of the autonomous individual. It is a strong, compelling and motivating factor in Western culture. “The autonomous individual … can be described as without bounds…creating his own standards to live by…challeng[ing] the individual to affirm his own life and create meaning for his life…the individual is alone in this process, but at the same time is free, not having to rely upon any other individual but himself. Through introspection, a turn inward, is where the beauty and essence of life is found.” (http://mcamp.hubpages.com/hub/nietzschekierkegaard). Dr. Brown points out that this leads to the cultivation of oneself as an image, based on purchasing the appropriate commodities. As several students have pointed out, one ultimate image of this is the Dos Equis man, “the most interesting man in the world”.
We have also seen throughout this semester the importance of images and the values they communicate. Many of you have pointed out in past posts that the drama, bipolar opposition, orientalism and the male gaze of the French Academy still exists today in all of our mass media (television shows, the internet, commercials, etc.).

Does she challenge any of the values we have been discussing all semester? If so, what and how?

How has our semester’s studies affected your understanding of Plato’s Allegory?
