American Revolution

This week we will be examining the events leading to the American Revolution and the impact of these on the development of America’s system of government and on American society. Answer one question as completely as possible, citing names, events, ideas, and other historical issues.  Support all answers with citations and references.

Citations and bibliographic references should be in the University of Chicago/Turabian style. For works in history, foot-notes or end-notes are required. (Avoid social science parenthetical citations). When in doubt, cite your sources of information.  Work to write clear and flowing essays with smooth transitions from point to point.  The instructor encourages the use of outside sources but does not require it.

The student’s main post should be submitted by Thursday, end of day, Maryland time.

Please answer or discuss ONE or more of the following:

1.  How did the Peace of Paris (1763), which formally ended the French and Indian/Seven Years War, begin the chain of events that lead to the American Revolution?  Explain.  (Hints:  debt, frontier lands, political vacuums, wartime experience, others, etc.).

2.  Fighting began in Massachusetts in April 1775.  Yet, the colonies did not declare independence until July 1776.  Why did it take so long?  What kinds of issues affected both the British and the Americans in the conduct of the war?  Discuss advantages and disadvantages each had.

3.  Name and discuss the events that led to the dissolution of the bonds of empire.  How did the American colonists view their role in the empire?  How did the British Crown and Parliament view the colonists’ place?  Why did the Americans think they had the rights of Englishmen?  Explain.

4.  Discuss what the American colonial society looked like in the 1760s.  How was society organized?  How did protest by the colonial elite change to a popular revolt?  What role did religion play?  How did the experience of the War for Independence/Revolutionary War affect this society?  Were the changes revolutionary or something less than revolutionary?  Explain.

5.  How did the experience of the Revolutionary War impact reform issues in the 1780s?  What is Republican culture and how did its creation impact social relations?  What reforms were implemented and what role did reform play in the independent states?  For women?  For African Americans?  For others?  Explain.

After answering one of the questions noted above, are there any issues or points you think are important to raise and discuss about this period?  Post and explain.
