The discussion board for week 13 will serve as the basis for the essay question: For this week I want you to take a look at the painting below. It is “American Progress” by John Gast and it represents manifest destiny, which is discussed briefly at the beginning of chapter 13. The painting would fit better for a discussion of chapter 16, but since we will not have a discussion board for that chapter I am choosing to include it now. For a western historian (like myself) it represents nearly all the elements of western expansion. Look at the painting and give your reaction to what you see. On top of writing about what the painting represents, its name, and the artist, I want you to write about three specific historical events that match up with the painting. For example: Something about Indians being moved from their traditional homes, a gold or silver rush for the miners, the transcontinental railroad, etc.
