Purpose
The Personal Background Paper addresses the following competencies and behaviors (B):

Competency 7: B 1, 2Identify someone in your family who is at least 2 generations older than you to interview in person. If you do not have access to a family member please choose someone you consider family, preferably of the same racial/ethnic/cultural background as you. If you do not have access to this person face to face please try to arrange Skype, Facetime, or some other way to see them while you talk if you have to use technology. The purpose of this assignment is to explore your ethnic and cultural background and its impact on your values and social work journey. Areas you will explore during your interview include, but are not limited to:
If your family member were to identify themselves racially, culturally, and socio-economically, what would they say?
What are the value priorities of your familyie., what were you raised to believe?
Does your family interact often with members of other racial/cultural groups? If not, why? Does your family express any biases about other racial or cultural groups? After the interview you will write an 8 10 page paper, double-spaced with 1 inch margins and 12-point font. Title page, abstract, and reference page are not part of the page count. This is a confidential paper. Please do not use any full names. You may use initials (ex: John Brown = JB) or you may use aliases such as John Brown = Bob. You need to find at least 1 journal article from scholarly literature within the last 10 years that allows you compare and contrast your experience with that of the issue highlighted in the article which you will cite APA/ASA style. The paper will contain 3 sections but should be submitted as one cohesive paper with proper introduction, conclusion, and integration of the findings from the interview, your personal experience, and the scholarly article:I. How you personally identify today in regards to racial background, generationally, socio-economically, culturally, nationality, gender, sexuality, and/or any other information you feel would be important to setting the landscape of your personal identify. Is how you identify today any different than how you have identified in the past? Are any of your identities a challenge for your family?What do you know about your familys background? Did you learn any new insights during your interview? Compare experiences between different family generations, how your views may differ or align with other family members, and your thoughts on how behavior and value norms have been passed on from one generation to the next.II. Reflections of privilege, oppression, and social justiceIn what ways has your family experienced privilege? From your perspective as well as the perspective of your elder. What are your feelings on this?

This paper will be turned in via Blackboard by 6:59pm using appropriate APA/ASA format on 10/3. About me: I was born and raised in the States, but both my parents were born in Mexico and became citizens in the United States when they moved to Texas in their late teen years. My grandparents both paternal and maternal are from Mexico, therefore I am a Hispanic with Mexican roots. I have 2 younger siblings 19 year old brother, and 15 year old sister who were born in the United States, Houston, TX, just like me.
