NOTE: 1. Use only the three references provided below 2. Parts 1&2 should add up to at least 300 words and Part 3 must be at least 200 words 3. Please follow paper instructions carefully and use appropriate grammar and mostly, your own words. Site using APA format for references below and where credit is due. Before you read Eating in the Underworld, it’s important that you read the myth of Demeter and Persephone, both as it is explained in chapter three of A Short History of Myth and on the link provided in Assignments. Eating in the Underworld is a contemporary book of poetry based on the myth of Demeter and Persephone, but what is different from many versions of the myth is that in Eating in the Underworld we get Persephones point of view in diary entries and letters to and from Hades (her husband) and Demeter (her mother). PART ONE: Choose a poem from the book. Find one that adds something new to the Demeter and Persephone myth as you have seen it in the two sources provided in this week’s reading. As you will remember, the thing about myths is that they change over time – there are often many difference versions of a myth. EXPLAIN THE POEM FOR THE CLASS AND TALK ABOUT WHAT IT ADDS TO THE STORY THAT IS ABSENT FROM THE OTHER VERSIONS YOU READ. PART TWO: Answer the question, “WHY DO YOU THINK THE MYTH OF DEMETER AND PERSEPHONE CONTINUES TO INSPIRE MODERN READERS AND WRITERS.” PART THREE: Karen Armstrong writes (page 36 in my edition) that heroes, “had to turn their backs on the familiar, and endure fearsome trials. They all had to face the prospect of death before returning with gifts to nourish the community… The hero feels that something is missing in his own life or in his society. The old ideas… no longer speak to him. So, he leaves home and endures death-defying adventures. He fights monsters, climbs inaccessible mountains, traverses dark forests and, in the process, dies to his old self, and gains new insight or skill, which he brings back to his people.” USING
