You will take turns playing the role of a social worker conducting an intake assessment. Within a group of three, each student will take turns acting as the social worker once and the client once. Please be prepared for both roles, thinking about what you will say ahead of time. Role Play Instructions Imagine you are a social worker at an agency that serves victims of domestic violence (both men and women). You conduct intake assessments for new clients coming live at the shelter. This is a critical time. The first few weeks when victims leave their partners, they are at the highest risk of being harmed. They are also the most vulnerable to return. Today, you are meeting a client who has just left his/her abuser, with their 5-year old child. The client is expressing self-doubt, shame, fear for safety and fears that s/he will “never make it alone”. Using the Quick Guide 8 (p.127) in your textbook, practice using the Assessment Questions for Discovering Strengths. As part of your intake assessment, ask your subject at least two of the questions on p. 127. Use your nonverbal and verbal communication skills to facilitate the client opening up and identifying their strengths. Use active listening skills to help them along. Self-Evaluation Instructions After the role play, complete a self-evaluation by downloading and completing the attached Self Evaluation form. The self evaluation and quick guide P 127 are attached
