How does Douglass implement argument strategies to do more than just tell a story?

Dr. SoutherlyENG 091Writing Project 2 Rhetorical Analysis EssayFrederick Douglass in The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave does more than just tell a story of his life. He is using language and his personal experiences to form an argument about the institution of slavery in the United States. Is Douglass successful in his purpose given his target audience? Does he create an effective argument? Everything is an argument, and it is necessary, as consumers of information, to be able to break down and analyze an argument to best understand what the author is doing and what his or her goals are given the target audience. Using your knowledge of the Rhetorical Situation and TRACE Analysis (using the rhetorical appeals ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos), you will write a rhetorical analysis essay that details the rhetorical strategies that Douglass uses in the two-chapter excerpt provided in class in order to determine whether or not his argument is effective. Do not try and include every example of each argumentation strategy employed by Douglass. Use your best judgement to focus on the best examples of the rhetorical appeals that help to determine the argument, target reader, author, constraints, and exigence. Refer to your notes from class and our discussions of the TRACE analysis method to help in the organization of the essay. You will be graded on the following criteria:Introductory sentences effectively introduce the excerpt title, author, and argumentDiscussion of TRACE and rhetorical appeals use examples from the text to support, demonstrating a strong understanding of the argumentAnalysis of the Rhetorical Situation is focused around the target audienceConclusion provides a clear understanding of the rhetorical situation and provides a statement about the effectiveness of the argumentFormatting (500 words minimum), double-spaced, 12-point academic font, header, title)Editing (spelling, word choice, punctuation, grammar, etc.)The final version of this writing project comprises 15% of your total grade.
