It is currently ten pages but the final draft can only be 8 pages. it currently has 10 sources in the literature review but it is really important that the literature review covers 15 sources. Here is the feedback for my professor on the essay. I’ve read through your draft research design. I think we need to work very hard on focusing your research. You have a lot of work to do. It’s doable, but this research must be your top priority every day. As far as I can tell you are looking at the effect of competitive races and non-competitive races on voter turnout. Most of the literature review is not about that, but rather about whether the Electoral College is democratic. I don’t think that’s your topic. Your hypothesis is voter turnout and therefore swing states have higher turnout. And you can test that in comparison to safe states. And you further hypothesize that presidential competition is more important than congressional competition. Your introduction needs substantial revision. What is the electoral college? How does it work? Who decides whether votes are apportioned on a winner-take-all basis? Beginning with a problem from 1962, when you have two cases in the last 20 years, is odd. Which states are you going to study? How will you know that it’s competition that’s driving turn out, or the lack of competition? How will you know it’s not something else? And what other possibilities are there? You will need to look at turnout by party in safe states. So to make a long story short, you really need to buckle down this week and make decisions about your sample, what you are testing, and how you are going to test it.
