In 1616, Jamestown colonist John Rolfe, developed a strain of tobacco that grew incredibly well in the hot, humid, and swampy environment of the Chesapeake Bay. As the seventeenth century (1600s) progressed, tobacco production soared in colonial Virginia (the Chesapeake Bay). By 1670, tobacco exports exceeded 10M lbs annually as colonists everywhere hoped to reap economic wealth through tobacco production. Tobacco, however, impacted more than just the economic development of the colony. Tobacco also played a key role in relations with Native Americans, as well as the development of a slave labor force. In thinking about the role that tobacco played throughout the 1600s in colonial Virginia, did tobacco play a greater role in dispossessing Native Americans of their land, or did tobacco play a greater role in the development of a slave labor system? Provide specific evidence from lecture or the course textbook (Davidson, U.S.: A Narrative History) to support your position. In developing your paper, you must have an argument that addresses the assignment question and underline that argument. If you cannot clearly explain your position, and underline that argument, how do you expect your TA to know your argument? Your paper will be penalized if you do not underline your argument. You must cite your evidence (material you are using from lecture or the textbook) with footnotes/endnotes (Chicago Style, example below).
