These fundamental mathematical concepts are rates, proportions, and ratios. This discussion explores rates, proportions, and ratios used within the health industry. You have been assigned a topic according to the first letter of your last name. Please identify the topic assigned to you below. For each topic, find a health science example of it in a published research study or news article. Topic is “Rate”Classmate 1: Schaveyantay ForemanSex ratios in health care occupationsThe article I chose is based on an article that was posted January 17th 2004, titled Sex rations in health occupations, this was a study conducted to see if a particular occupation in the health field was predominantly male or female dominated. The study focused on persons between the ages of 18 and 44 because this age range typically makes up the majority of the ages in working class america, in this study if the occupation was more than 70% belonging to one sex then it was described as either male dominated of female dominated. They took a census during the years of 1971 to 2001 of the employees for different health care positions and it was determined that in 1971 there was 10 male dominated occupations and 13 female dominated occupations, and as the years progressed the percentage of males in the health work force decreased steadily all the way to 2001. The decrease was between 11-62 percentage points across the board, the surgeon jobs became more female dominated as well as the optometry jobs. (Grant, Valerie J. January 17th 2004). I think that a ratio system was the best way to go about this study because ratios compare any two values or show the relative magnitude between any two quantities and the numerator and denominator do not need to be related which allows them to compare men and women in the health care field. A proportion would only compare the amount of women or men in a certain work field (like optometry) compared to the amount of men or women in the health field as a whole. You would not be able to compare them both because the numerator and the denominator need to be the same. You cannot compare apples to oranges with a proportion. Sex ratios in healthcare occupations: population based study

A proportion is the comparison of a part of a whole. “It is a type of ratio in which the numerator is included in the denominator” (Center of Disease Control, 2012). A percentage can be expressed as a decimal, fraction or a percentage. Proportion can be used to describe the amount of disease that can be attributed to a particular exposure. An example of proportion being used in health care could be when people get swine flu. A total of 150 people were affected by swine flu and 50 of them died. The proportion who died were 50/100 and as a percentage that is 33.3 percent.
