A notable event that changed the course of my life was when I dated someone who was sentenced to seven years in prison. Her name was Yasmine; I had been with Yasmine for about a year before she started her time. In December of 2012, Yasmine ran a red light and was struck by another vehicle which ended up in a collision, which killed a young woman who just happened to be crossing the street during the same time of the accident. I had dated Yasmine prior to the accident, so we were still together afterwards as well. However, the entire thing changed my life. Yasmine began her time about a year ago and date someone who is serving time is not comfortable at all. I see things differently; I do not take anything for granted anymore. I have realized that you cannot make a relationship survive with just one person trying. I have also came to see that it is important to live daily as if it is your last because you never grasp when it will be taken away from you. I am no longer with Yasmine but being with her, from beginning to end, that was a colossal learning experience, both good and bad.
Before I had met Yasmine, I lived my life in a very careless way, not caring about anything because I took it all for granted. I did not appreciate the little things, like freedom and learning to breathe in fresh air whenever I pleased.

Dating someone who is serving time is hard sufficient by itself, but it is even harder when only one person is settling in the effort. Every single relationship requires both people to try, because if not, it could end as quickly as it started. Long distance relationships are challenging and already so much of a sacrifice to begin with; now try dating an inmate, where only daily phone calls and weekly visits are allowed. It seems same it would be difficult to make a relationship last for five years on just phone calls and visits, but it is possible. Just because event is possible, does not mean it is readily accomplished, it takes much hard work from both sides.
Being with Yasmine showed me a side of life that I was always too scared to look at. I learned that if I am always scared to take chances in life, and always s concerned about what another will estimate of me, when will I start to live my life? I could become in a car collision tomorrow, like Yasmine did, and be send away for a long time, knowing I did not do half of the things I want to.

Yasmine changed my life in many ways, both good and bad. Either it was a positive or negative, the whole thing was an eye opener and learned experience. I have got a different way to view at life, a deeper appreciation for everything and the courage to enjoy my life, the way I want to. I am a strong believer in that certain people are placed into our beings to serve as a purpose. Yasmine undoubtedly taught and showed me more than I would have ever expected. I guess that is just something we have no control over, and that is what fate is.
