Directions;
1) Read Edward Brewer’s case study in Gini’s Introduction to Case Studies in Business Ethics (CSB), The Wal-Mart Way, and focus on what the article reveals about conflicting interests between large corporations and small businesses.
2) Write down some notes about the following question – what is the role of small businesses in a community? What, in your opinion are the social advantages, not only financial, of having a community in which local businesses flourish?
3) Write a 1- page micro-theme describing the impact that Wal-Mart on many of the communities across the United States and take a position regarding the utility of the tradeoffs between the price benefits offered by Wal-Mart and the consequences to small communities. 1) Is this a balanced tradeoff? 2) Would you allow Wal-Mart or other similar retailer come to your community if it had a slowly growing local economy and it were in your power to decide?
