How to Write the Five-Paragraph Persuasive Essay
Paragraph 1. Introduction
Write a catch sentence. This sentence must “catch” the attention of the person scoring your essay. The catch sentence should be very brief. Consider re-writing your catch sentence as an attention-grabbing question.
Write your position sentence beginning with the words “I believe that …” Once you have chosen a position, stick to it! Do not change your mind!
Write the thesis sentence. Use this format: Three reasons why I believe (summarize your position sentence) are 1, 2, and 3. Use as many ideas and words from the writing prompt as possible.
Paragraph 2. The First Support Paragraph
Write the topic sentence using the first idea (1) from your thesis sentence.
Write four sentences of general support that sustain this topic sentence.
Write a transition sentence that leads into the topic sentence of Paragraph 3. Use words such as “However” or “In addition” or “in effect.”
Paragraph 3. The Second Support Paragraph
Write the topic sentence using the second idea (2) from your thesis sentence.
Write four sentences of general support that sustain this topic sentence.
Write a transition sentence that leads into the topic sentence of Paragraph 4. Use words such as “However” or “In addition” or “in effect.”
Paragraph 4. The Third Support Paragraph
Write the topic sentence using the third idea (3) from your thesis sentence.
Write four sentences of general support that sustain this topic sentence.
Paragraph 5. Conclusion
Begin paragraph 5 with the words “In conclusion”, and restate the position sentence.
Restate the thesis sentence from Paragraph 1 – Introduction. “1, 2, and 3.are three reasons I support …”
Restate three support sentences, one from Paragraph 2, one from Paragraph 3, and one from Paragraph 4.
