Renaissance Art: Final Research Paper
Final research Paper
Due: August 15th midnight, on Moodle
In lieu of a third short paper and a research paper, I have combined them both, and you will need to turn this into me by August 15th on Moodle from wherever you are.
This final paper will be 10-12 pages of research on the last phase of the Renaissance. You should examine the final chapters in the text—from Chs. 16—20, and select 4 artists you think best represent the period.
You should use outside sources—3 at least—articles, books, etc—from your university library—and 1 or 2 from the internet. Again, do not use encyclopedias or publicly-corrected websites. Be sure to document any information you use, using the APA or MLA style, both manuals of which can be found online or at your university library.
As a research paper, your paper needs to explore a specific manageable topic of your choice, but avoid writing vast, generalized papers about Leonardo, or Raphael or Bronzino. Instead, focus on a question you have, an idea, or a comparative topic that can be useful in examining your 4 artists. For example, a good title and paper might read: “ Greek Myths Reworied in Selected Paintings of Correggio, Bronzino, Dossi, and Vasari”. Avoid titles like: “The Architecture of Michelangelo”—this is much too broad and not focused.
The more focused, the easier it will be for you and you will not be overwhelmed with the materials.
You can compare the works, contrast them, and analyze each, showing how the art changed, how colors are used, what themes were employed, what the story is, how the works were seen in context, etc. Be sure to be very specific: names, dates places, historical context–all should be used.
Organization: your first paragraph should introduce us to what you will be covering, who you will analyze, and why their works make such a difference in the last phase of the Renaissance. Your following paragraphs should of course give a brief bio of the artists, and then the body of the paper should analyze one work from each, or compare them, using quotes or backup materials from texts or articles.
Your conclusion should really conclude: you should draw inferences, show how the works may have influenced artists to come, challenge our concepts of the Renaissance, or deepen our understanding of the changes that occurred.
BE SURE TO EXAMINE ARTISTS (SCULPTURE, PAINTING, OR ARCHITECTURE) FROM THE LAST PART OF THE RENAISSANCE, not the first or second—CHS. 16—20, AS A GUIDE IN YOUR TEXT.
PAGES; 10-12 TYPED, SUBMITTED TO MOODLE ON OR BEFORE AUGUST 20TH. USE 12 POINT FONT. IF YOU EXCEED THE NUMBER OF PAGES, NO PROBLEM. ANYTIHING UNDER 10 PAGES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
IMAGES MAY BE EMBEDDED, BUT THEY SHOULD BE KEPT SMALL—IT IS BETTER TO PLACE IMAGES ON SEPARATE PAGES AS AN APPELDIX ATTACHED TO THE PAPER BEFORE THE REFERENCE PAGE, BUT THESE PAGES WILL NOT COUNT AS PART OF THE 10-12 PAGES OF WRITING YOU WILL NEED TO DO.
